Global Offshore Wind, 2018

Offshore Wind has massive potential. Bloomberg New Energy Finance anticipates that the global offshore wind market will grow to 115GW by 2030 – a six-fold increase in 12 years! 2019 is expected to be a record year for offshore wind power in established markets with many emergent markets such as the US and Taiwan really ramping up. In addition, UK’s 30GW ambition will attract unrivaled opportunities for the supply chain, and £48 billion investment.

According to a recent report by Wind Europe, 2017 added twice the amount of new capacity than in 2016, raising Europe’s total installed offshore wind capacity to 15,780MW. There are now 92 offshore wind farms in 11 European countries, and once 11 offshore projects under construction are completed, the total installed grid connected capacity will increase to 18.7GW.

New market opportunities in Europe abound with Polish offshore wind now attracting significant interest and Equinor investing in Polenergia’s lease area1. Irish offshore wind is now also showing signs of progress after a very protracted hiatus but faces problems with grid capacity and specific offshore wind incentivisation and support mechanisms.

Further afield, Taiwan and the USA are emerging as the most attractive global offshore wind markets. The Taiwanese have completed significant leasing activities and the USA have taken a major leap forward in announcing PPA support for offshore wind leases offshore Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The potential for US offshore wind is framed by the phrase ’50 by 50′ now being regularly talked about among key industry players; 50GW by 2050.

We are pleased to be delivering on contracts in emergent markets around the world, including significant contracts in the USA and Taiwan. This global view and reach has now resulted in an experience portfolio totalling over 40GW of offshore wind energy from the earliest planning stages to detailed design and construction. At Cathie, we believe we are at the inception point of a truly global industry building upon the recent significant falls in LCOE and we stand ready to offer truly leading expertise at a local level.
